One of the biggest complaints against relying on online surveys has been the perception of reliability. There has been quite a bit of research done comparing phone surveys to online surveys and it is well known that :
Users tend not to be extremely critical in phone surveys since they are actually talking to a human being while responding to the survey
It is very difficult to quantify the quality of online surveys - Did the user take it, or did they forward invitation to their friends etc.
We got approached by a company called Telesign - They have a pretty cool solution for verification of phone numbers. It works the same way all of us do Email Verification - when you signup with a service. With telesign, after entering a phone number, the system calls you within 30 seconds that gives you a unique code or identifier that you enter in back for verification
What does this prove?
It proves that at least that:
The person answering the survey has access to the phone number
It's a real person answering the survey
Privacy Issues?
Of course there are privacy implications. Completely anonymous surveys cannot obviously use this mechanism.
We are currently in the process of integrating our engine with Telesign. Let us know what your think about it. To take a cool online demo goto:
BUT on the subject of reliability, why are my respondents complaining about access to the site and why is your interactive help facility not working at 8am pacific time when you say it is avaialble 8 -8 PST?
